Each year 5th grade students from Fairhope Schools compete to design the Anti-Litter poster for the City of Fairhope Earth Day Celebration.  This year the winner was Libby Kate Waters from J. Larry Newton School.  Libby Kate will be recognized this weekend by the mayor during a celebration this Saturday at the Fairhope Municipal Pier.  Emma Tunnell and Claire McDonald also represented J. Larry Newton School by winning Honorable Mention certificates for their designs.

RICKY TRIONE VISITS NEWTON SCHOOL

The Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation (FEEF) has sponsored a week long visit by local artist Ricky Trione to Newton Elementary. Ricky Trione is a Fairhope native who enjoyed drawing very realistically for years. In August of 2000, Ricky had the second of two freak accidents that took away his vision, one eye at a time. He no longer could drive or do pen and ink drawing.  In 2006, Ricky began collaborating on a piece of artwork with his childhood friend, Vicky Nix Cook, who is the fine arts supervisor for Baldwin County Schools. Vicky worked with Ricky and helped him create his tactile style of painting. His new style includes raised paint that allows him to  feel his way across the surface of the painting. Newton students painted individual pieces of art and contributed to a student created mural that will hang in the school.  Ricky helps children to understand that with  hope and inspiration that you can be creative and work through limitations. We appreciate Mr. Trione and FEEF for providing our students this opportunity.
