COUNTY COMMISSION KEEPS 1 CENT SALES TAX ALIVE

The following message was sent to all BCBE audiences via e-mail Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017

For the past few years there has been great concern about the expiring 1 penny sales tax which provides nearly $40 million for Baldwin County Public Schools. We spent a great part of 2016 in discussions with local leaders about a long term funding solution that would end the recurring renewals. Today we have great news.

This morning we learned of a decision by the Baldwin County Commission to extend the 1 penny sales tax for Baldwin Schools. While we are surprised at the speed upon which the commission took action on this matter, and the unanimous vote by the commissioners, we are grateful beyond words.

Today's unanimous vote by the commission shows the importance of this long term fix. Baldwin County has a lot of issues to address as we face amazing growth but this one has been resolved with today's action.

We expect to partner with the Baldwin County Commission to continue working through these and other issues related to growth with a positive outlook to the future of Baldwin County.

On behalf of the children, parents, teachers, administrators and board members we say thank you to the Baldwin County Commissioners for your courageous vote to preserve today's quality of education in Baldwin County.

Eddie Tyler,
Superintendent
