Elementary Education

 

From an early age, Dr. McCurdy has been deeply committed to education and student success. Her journey began with earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Florida, followed by a Master of Education and Instructional Leadership certification from the University of South Alabama. She furthered her expertise by earning an Educational Specialist degree and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from Auburn University.  

 

Dr. McCurdy began her career as an English Language Arts teacher at Robertsdale High School, where she taught advanced placement and honors courses and inspired countless students. Her passion for leadership and innovation led her to pursue administrative roles, including Assistant Principal and Principal, where she has continuously demonstrated her ability to drive positive change in schools.  

In 2020, Dr. McCurdy began serving as the Principal of Florence B. Mathis Elementary, where she has established a thriving and inclusive school environment. Under her leadership, Mathis Elementary achieved a "B" on the state report card, a remarkable accomplishment given its unique challenges, including the highest ELL population in the county. Dr. McCurdy’s efforts to implement programs like Kagan Cooperative Learning strategies, artisan showcase and Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) reflect her commitment to academic excellence and community involvement.  

Dr. McCurdy’s schools have received numerous accolades, including Cognia STEM certification, Purple Star designation, and recognition as a Leader in Me Lighthouse school. Her emphasis on fostering a positive culture has earned Mathis Elementary multiple "Best of Baldwin" awards for its staff and programs.  

In her role as Assistant Superintendent, Dr. McCurdy will focus on academics and school improvement, bringing her proven track record of success and dedication to all Baldwin County schools.

In an effort to ensure equitable and fair grading practices in elementary schools throughout the Baldwin County Public School System, the district has adopted a standard grading format to be used with all students in grades 1-6.  All grades earned by students should reflect the degree to which they have learned and mastered grade-level curricular standards mandated by the Alabama State Department of Education.
