Alabama students and teachers are provided content designed to promote competence in the areas of social studies, math, science, English language arts, IB, fine arts, health & PE, world languages, and general electives. The rigorous, challenging content standards in this document offer a sound curricular framework designed to enable all students at all grade levels to acquire the essential knowledge and skills necessary to function in today’s society. English Language Arts (ELA)

Course of Standards: English Language Arts

The 2021 Alabama Curriculum: English Language Arts presents a sound framework designed to prepare students for the English Language Arts demands in both college studies and careers. Within this document is a set of challenging content standards for students at each grade level. Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) assessments are based on these standards, and Alabama Achieves: A Strategic Plan for a New Decade defines the accountability measures enacted to ensure student growth.

Fine Arts

Course of Standards: Fine Arts

Arts Literacy: Inspiring and Engaging Lifelong Learners is the goal of Alabama's K-12 arts education program. Encompassing the disciplines of dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts, the arts in education program provides opportunities for students to explore the artistic processes of these disciplines while making connections to all subject areas. To emphasize the importance of the arts for Alabama students, the Alabama Course of Study: Arts Education provides rigorous standards for all students in Grades K-12. This document reflects national standards, providing for the development of skills in each discipline with an underlying appreciation for the significance of the arts across societies and cultures.

Society and the workplace require that all Alabama students receive a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and understanding in mathematics. Alabama educators must focus on the teaching of mathematics in ways that enable students to expand professional opportunities, understand and critique the world, and experience the joy, wonder, and beauty of mathematics.

Course of Standards: Social Studies

ALSDE-approved 2010 Social Studies Curriculum Standards. The 2010 Alabama Curriculum: Social Studies provides Alabama students and teachers with a curriculum that contains content designed to promote competence in the areas of economics, geography, history, civics, and government. With an emphasis on responsible citizenship, these content areas serve as the four organizational strands for the Grades K-12 social studies program.
