Deborah Whetstone

I grew up in Gulf Shores and am happy to be teaching here! I earned my B.A. in Spanish from the University of Alabama, and my M.A. in Spanish from Bowling Green State University (Ohio). I lived in Spain for about 11 years, two years as a student at the Universidad of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), and the rest teaching and translating. I taught Spanish to American students from the University of Alabama at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, and translated for many companies and organizations, among them the Spanish government and the European Union. I moved back to Gulf Shores with my family in 2011. My husband, Ramón Cortés, and I have four children, and they attend Gulf Shores schools. I love this community and the students and families I work with.

I love teaching Spanish at all levels, and I sponsor the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, which is a national honor society for students of Spanish. I also sponsor the Women's Club and the Debate Club. Each of these three clubs, in its own way and from its particular perspective, seeks to connect GSHS students with GSES and GSMS students, as well as with the community at large.
