Degrees and Certifications:

Ms. Patricia M. Smathers, MEd., EdS.

I am a new teacher to Foley Elementary School this year.  I am working in the multiple disabilities classroom.  I have been teaching for 20 years (18 years in Georgia and 2 years in Oklahoma).  I have an undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in music therapy.  I worked as  music therapist in a state hospital for 10 years.  I completed a masters degree in special education (behavioral disorders) and a specialist degree in special education (interrelated special education) from the University of West Georgia.  My training as a special education teacher began when I was three years old and my little sister was born.  She has spina bifida and she has been an incredible teacher and inspiration to me.  I moved to Alabama to be closer to my mother and sister (and I also enjoy the beach of course).

I am the proud mother of Andrew Smathers who lives in Texas.  He just recently completed his masters degree in vocal performance and loves all things opera.  I have two dogs (a collie and a Yorkshire terrier) and they are my other two children.

I look forward to getting to know my students and their families.  I try to make learning enjoyable for students that struggle with so many tasks that most of us take for granted.   Having a sister with special needs, I also know how important it is to have high expectations for my students.   I am fortunate to be here at Foley Elementary and excited about the year ahead.  I am learning my way around!  Thanks for the opportunity to work with you students.
