Bus Riders, Car Line & Walkers
This information is included in the GSES student handbook.
In the mornings, students brought to school by car will unload in the front of the school in a single line. Parents enter the school by 16th Street and turn right onto the semi-circle in front of the main building. Parents will exit the campus area via 15th street. Parents MUST drive their cars as far forward as possible in order for multiple cars to unload. It is important for students to cross to the sidewalk in front of the vehicle.
CAR, BUS, WALKER CHANGES
Telephone requests for transportation changes will not be accepted. Instead, if your child will have a transportation change for that day, please send your child to school with clear written instructions as to how your child will go home. In cases of emergency, please fax (251-968-7217) transportation changes as soon as possible.
The first bell will ring at 2:50. At that time students will start to move to their designated holding stations to be dismissed.
The car riders will start being dismissed to their cars around 2:55 p.m. A car rider number is required and may be obtained at the school office. If a car rider tag is not provided, the parent must park and come inside with picture ID to pick up their child. Parents are asked to keep the car rider number visible until the student is loaded. Also, parents are asked to remain in their cars while waiting for their child. Please limit cell phone use while driving in the car line due to safety concerns. Students should be picked up by 3:20 p.m.
*A “walker” is a student who walks (includes bikers) all the way home or meets parents somewhere off campus. Parents are not permitted to park on campus to pick up a student if their child is a “walker”. Carline is for all parents that want to bring their car on campus. Walkers will be dismissed shortly after 2:50. *In the event of inclement weather during dismissal, parents may use walker tag in carline to pick up their child.*
Group 1 (Every Day or Occasionally)- Students that walk, without a parent or guardian, home or to meet parents off campus. Teachers will check the students’ names on the list and walk them to the biking/walking trail which leads toward Meyer Park.
This group is best for students in grades 3-6 that are capable of walking home alone. (1-2 gr. siblings may walk with fifth or sixth graders if parents feel the older students are capable of looking after them). Parents should not come on campus to meet them, but may meet them on the trail. *See Groups 2 or 3 for parents to meet kids on campus.
Group 2 (Every Day or Occasionally) - Students in grades K-2, that do not have siblings in grades 3-6, have their names checked off the list. Parents must have the “walker” number tag to match their child’s number and wait outside the side door of cafeteria to receive their child. This group is best for young children that do not need to walk alone but parents wish to walk them home or to cars parked off campus.
Group 3 (Every Day or Occasionally) - Students in grades 3-6 and their younger siblings (if they have them) have their names checked off the list. Parents must have the “walker” number tag to match their child’s number and wait outside the side door of cafeteria.
This group is best for students whose parents wish to pick them up (for multiple reasons even though they are older than group 2 students) to either walk them home or to cars parked off campus.
Group 4 (Every Day or Occasionally) - Students that have parents that work in the middle or high schools or have practices at the middle school. These students are checked off a list and sent to our middle and high schools (if they are old enough). Younger students are asked to ride a bus to the other schools. Their parents or coaches should be looking out to receive them. No Exceptions. The middle school will not permit elementary students to be picked up on their campus.
Group 5 (Every Day or Occasionally) - Students that need to cross Hwy 180, to the crossing guard to get to where their parents are parked. They will be checked off a list and walked by a teacher to the crossing guard.
Buses will begin departing from GSES by 3:05 with the last wave of buses leaving around 3:15. All bus riders should be dropped off at their house by 4:30.
