08.12.21 BCBE Board President Message

Over the last few weeks, the Baldwin County Public School System has re-implemented several COVID protocols in an effort to keep our schools open and operating safely. During that time, we have heard from many parents. While the vast majority have been supportive, there are very vocal folks who are unhappy with the requirement of a mask. Some don't think the mask requirement is enough and some have asked about delaying school or closing school as well as reporting and quarantining protocols.

While many emails have been written and conversations held in other public forums, as the school board president, I feel the appropriate forum is in front of the elected officials who are charged with making these decisions. To address all of these many different concerns related to our COVID response, the Baldwin County Board of Education will be holding a special meeting Thursday, August 19, at the Loxley Satellite Office Auditorium, to allow the public to speak on the school system's 2021-2022 COVID actions. The board will be allowing an extended comment period and the only items to be discussed are those related to the system's COVID response.

Thirty speakers from the public will each be given two minutes to address the board and public. There will be a sign-up sheet made available at 4:30 p.m. on the day of the meeting. Fifteen spaces will be provided for those who are opposed to the steps currently taken by the school system and fifteen spaces available for those who support the steps taken by the school system or who would advocate for additional steps.

At the end of the public comment period, the board will have a discussion over the system's COVID actions and response. Following any discussion, the board will have the opportunity to take official action should they deem such necessary.

All attendees must wear a mask while indoors and all speakers signing in must be residents of Baldwin County. Due to fire regulations, as well as the recent COVID outbreak, space in the room will be limited, however, the meeting will be live-streamed and available online at www.bcbe.org.

The regularly scheduled board meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, August 17, where normal school board business will be transacted. There will be no discussion of COVID and no public speakers will be allowed on that subject at Tuesday's regular meeting to keep the focus on Thursday’s special board meeting.
