Mrs. Tonya Harrelson

I am Tonya Harrelson, principal of JL Newton Elementary and I enthusiastically extend a warm welcome to each of you as we begin an exciting academic year. I am honored to serve at a school with a commitment to academic excellence. I previously served as assistant principal at Fairhope Middle School for 5 years. Prior to that, I taught 8th grade Algebra I for 13 years at Fairhope Middle. I have also taught for 10 years in 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and my Master’s in Elementary Education from Auburn University. I also earned my Educational Leadership degree from the University of West Alabama.

With 28 years of experience in education, I have a deep passion for instilling a love of learning in our students. My priority is to ensure that every student at JL Newton Elementary receives a top-notch education in a safe learning environment while experiencing the warmth of a close-knit family atmosphere. I believe that a positive partnership between home and school is crucial for the development of our students. I encourage you to actively engage with us and support us throughout your child's journey.

At JL Newton Elementary, we strive for high academic achievement. We consistently work to enable students to master grade level standards. We have a team of dedicated and experienced educators who are committed to providing an exceptional learning experience which will meet individual student needs. We believe in fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and fine arts to prepare our students for a future filled with endless possibilities.

In addition to academic excellence, we emphasize the importance of character development. Our students learn to advocate for themselves while treating others with kindness and respect. We believe in nurturing a safe environment where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

Thank you for entrusting us with the education of your child.
