ATTENDANCE AND ABSENCE PROCEDURES
Attendance Policy
Baldwin County Board of Education
South Baldwin Center for Technology operates under the block schedule for class schedules and awarding of credits. Therefore, the following attendance policy is followed:
For students in a semester-long class
In grades 9-12, a student may not exceed five (5) unexcused absences per class in a semester-long class. If a student misses more than half of a class period, a full absence will be accumulated. The student will lose credit for any class in which the unexcused absences exceed five (5) per class. The student can make-up up to two (2) unexcused absences by attending Academic Saturday School before the end of the semester.
A student and a student’s parent or guardian will receive written notice when a student’s unexcused absences exceed two (2) days in any class. When the student exceeds three (3) unexcused absences per class, the student and parent/guardian can petition the Attendance Committee at the school for review of the reasons for absences. Petition for review by the Attendance Committee can be filled out at any time after notification, but in any event, no later than 20 calendar days before the final day of the semester. The Attendance Committee shall review the student’s entire attendance record and documented excuses to determine whether to award credit.
SAFETY AND INSURANCE
Each student should buy the school insurance which is offered at each parent school at the beginning of the school year or be covered by an adequate home policy. Safety precautions must be observed in all departments. There are many hazards in a shop--even though it has been made as safe as possible. Students and/or parents are responsible for all expenses/costs related to injuries.
THE FOLLOWING RULES SHALL BE OBSERVED IN EACH DEPARTMENT:
- Hair shall be managed in such a way so that it will not create a safety hazard around tools and equipment. Hair color or style that creates a disturbance will not be acceptable. Caps may be worn in shops only. Keep in mind that one of the goals of career and technical education is to prepare you for entering the workforce.
- Students are asked to keep work clothes at school. Lockers are available for storing clothing and other school items. Shop clothes, including helmets, gloves, safety glasses, and hats are not to be worn to or from the base schools. These items are to be kept in your shop locker. Clothes may be taken home to be cleaned.
Flip flops and open toed shoes are not permitted in the shop settings and other departments as they do not meet safety and/or health guidelines.
- School approved eye protection will be worn in each of the shops when doing any type of work which endangers eyesight. Examples include: drilling, sawing, servicing, soldering, grinding, cutting and others.
Dress Code-see below

A hardcopy may also be sent home at the beginning of each school year for all parents and students to review.
Please note that every student is assumed to have permission to use Internet resources.
