History of Summerdale School
-
Summerdale School was founded in 1907 with 5 students and met inside the original 2 story Masonic Building that was located at 202 East Jackson Avenue which is about 2 blocks from our current location.
In 1913, a 3-room building with a large hall was constructed and remodeled as the enrollment increased for the 1st through 12th grades.
When the surrounding communities combined into Summerdale School in 1928, a 3-room brick schoolhouse with a cafeteria was built on the current location at 400 East Broadway. Additional rooms were added to each wing as enrollment continued to grow.
In the 1940’s, the 10th, 11th and 12th grades were sent to Foley High School making Summerdale a 1st through 9th grade school.
Years later, the 9th grade followed to Foley High School and Summerdale gained a Kindergarten and finally a Pre-Kindergarten.
Additional buildings and improvements have been added throughout the years and now the school has 5 classroom buildings, a cafeteria, a full-size gymnasium and football field with field house on campus.
To date we have Pre-K through 8th grades with close to 600 students enrolled.
