  • NBTech Cosmetology Program Video: Cosmetology

    ·     A person licensed to provide cosmetic treatments to the hair, skin, and nails : one trained in cosmetology

    ·      Cosmetologists provide personal care services that include caring for people's hair, skin, and nails. Beauty professionals employed in the cosmetology industry include hair stylists, barbers, and estheticians, also called skin care specialists.

    ·      Customers visiting hair or nail salons are often looking to professionals to look and feel beautiful. They may want a new hairdo, color update, manicure or pedicure. People enjoy getting pampered by a cosmetologist. These services can help eliminate stress, raise self-esteem and improve the health of hair and nails

    Technical Requirements:

    Maintains supplies by checking stock; anticipating needs; placing orders; verifying receipt.
    Prepares hair for styling by analyzing hair condition; shampooing and treating hair.
    Conditions hair and scalp by applying treatments.
    Plans desired effect by studying facial features; examining potential styles; conferring with customer; making recommendations.
    Produces desired effect by arranging, shaping, curling, cutting, trimming, setting, bleaching, dyeing, and tinting hair.
    Maintains quality service by following organization standards.
    Maintains safe and healthy conditions by following organization standards and legal regulations.
    Obtains revenue by recording or collecting charges.
    Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing publications.

    General Education Requirements:

    ·      Must be at least 16 years old

    ·      Has successfully completed at least 10 grades in secondary school, or the equivalent

    ·      Must complete one of the following programs

    1.  Barber:  1,000 school clock hours or 2,000 apprentice hours.

    2.  Cosmetologist: 1,500 school clock hours or 3,000 apprentice hours.

    3.  Esthetician: 1,000 school clock hours or 2,000 apprentice hours.

    4.  Natural Hair Stylist: 210 school hours or 420 apprentice clock hours.

    5.  Manicurist: 750 school hours or 1,200 apprentice hours.

    School Hours and Apprentice Hours MAY NOT BE CONBINED

     

    Estimated Salary:

     Cosmetologists earn an average yearly wage of $29,590 or $14.23 per hour, not including tips, which can add another 15 to 20 percent to base salary. The lowest-paid 10 percent of stylists earn $17,930 per year, and the highest-paid 10 percent make over $49,050.

    Program Features:

    Workforce Development is an integral part of the Cosmetology Program here at North Baldwin Center for Technology. We have an up to date, and working salon for lab activities.  Students dress code is aligned with other Cosmetology Schools from the area. Students use badges and a time clock system so that students and Instructors can accurately record seat time. Students that complete the program easily transfer from High School to either the workforce or enter into a Secondary Education.
