English as a Second Language

  • ESL Department Program Goals & Objectives: Title III 

    ESL (English as a Second Language) services shall be provided to students for whom English is a second (or other) language and who have been identified as being an EL (English Learner), regardless of immigrant status. The primary theory and goal for the ESL program in the district are to improve the education of English learners by assisting the children to learn English and meet the challenging state academic standards. (Sec. 3102) 

     

    Program Goals: 

    · English learners will acquire English proficiency and parity of participation in the standard instructional program within a reasonable length of time 

    ·The ELL Department will provide high-quality English language instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to support student mastery of academic content at each grade level (service and programs will be based on educationally sound theory and effective practice.) 

    · Provide high-quality, consistent professional development to district faculty and staff to support ELLs 

    ·English Learners will have equal access to curricular and extracurricular school programs including but not limited to special education & gifted services, afterschool activities, and additional tutoring, with information provided in the language of the guardian/parent 

     

    Program Objectives: 

    ·Increase the English proficiency of English Learners by providing quality language instruction educational programs  

    ·Increase the academic achievement of English Learners in the core academic subjects  

    · Improve the instruction of English Learners by providing quality professional development to teachers, administrators, and other school or community-based personnel  

    · Improve the coordination between elementary/secondary language instruction education programs and other relevant programs and services 

     

    The ESL program in Baldwin County offers a combination of self-contained services, inclusion services, virtual services, and pull-out services for ELs. Support services are provided to all classroom teachers and other school staff. 

     

    There are currently more than 2,000 English Language Learners enrolled in Baldwin County Public Schools. These students are served by 40+ ESL Resource Teachers and ESL Instructional Aides.
