    Dear Parents/Guardians:

October is National Bullying Prevention and Awareness month. Daphne East Elementary school students are taught bullying prevention and awareness in counseling lessons each school year. In preparation, Mrs. Jones and I wanted to give you some information/reminders to help you and your student(s) discuss these matters.

We teach students the definition and the different forms of bullying as well as the differences between bullying, rudeness, and meanness. At Daphne East Elementary, we take bullying very seriously. Therefore, it is imperative that our students learn to discern what bullying is, what to do when they are being bullied or if they see/hear about someone being bullied. Here are the definitions we will be teaching.

Rudeness: Accidentally saying or doing something that hurts feelings or embarrasses someone. This also includes inconsiderate, thoughtless, unplanned behavior (examples: burping, sneezing on others, bragging, getting in someone’s space).

Meanness: Saying or doing something on purpose to hurt someone maybe once or twice. This is usually said in anger to make someone else look bad and we usually feel regret later (examples: making fun of someone’s looks, intelligence, breaking someone’s belongings). Meanness can also be a result of a disagreement between peers.

Bullying is defined by stopbullying.gov as: (1) unwanted aggressive behavior; (2) observed or perceived power imbalance; and (3) repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition.

All three components must be present to be considered bullying.

The four types of bullying include: physical, verbal, social, and cyber bullying. Of course, if you feel your child is being bullied or are concerned that it could be bullying, don’t hesitate to contact us. Thank you!
